Nigerian PLHIV network: NEPWHAN

Summary

The Network of People Living with HIV and AIDS in Nigeria (NEPWHAN) was formed in 1998 with less than 10 Support Groups. Today the network has over 600 support groups in all the 36 states of Nigeria including the capital, Abuja. NEPWHAN is saddled with the responsibility of coordinating the programs and activities of support groups, associations, organizations and constituencies of PLHIV in Nigeria. 
In terms of directional thrust, the Network set for itself, two main tasks: 
  • Mobilization of PLHIV all over the country, organizing them into support groups and empowering them to join in the national response with the aim of reducing and eventually eliminating further spread of the virus; and
  • Mitigating the impact of HIV and AIDS on the life of PLHIV, PABA, orphans and vulnerable children and right protection. 

Mission and Vision

Vision:

"NEPWHAN envisions a country where People Living with HIV and AIDS, Orphans and Vulnerable Children are given equal rights and privileges like every other member of the society."

Mission:

To empower, strengthen and coordinate all support groups, state networks, constituencies, associations and organizations of people living with HIV and AIDS in Nigeria to contribute meaningfully to the national response; with the overall goal of advocating for the rights of PLHIV and OVC/OVC in Nigeria and seek to put in place comprehensive HIV and AIDS prevention, care and support services.

Other

Objectives:

  • encourage formation of new, and strengthen existing Support Groups of People Living with HIV and AIDS for the purpose of exchange of ideas and sharing experiences on their common problems;
  • empower PLHIV in Nigeria with adequate knowledge and skills to deal with the HIV and AIDS pandemic;
  • advocate for the protection of basic human rights of PLHIV as provided for in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria;
  • solicit support for PLHIV;
  • ensure representation of and meaningful involvement of PLHIV in relevant fora locally and internationally;
  • advocate for biomedical and social research to HIV and AIDS response in line with international best practices; and
  • strengthen cooperation and collaborate with Nigerian government and other relevant stakeholders in the prevention and control of HIV and AIDS as well as care and support of PLHIV.
