Tanzania
As of December 2009, there were 1.4 million people living with HIV in the country. HIV prevalence was 5.6% at the end of 2009, which shows a decline from the 7% prevalence reported in a 2004 survey. At the end of 2009, there were nearly 200,000 people on antiretroviral treatment, which corresponds to 30% coverage of all people in need.
Mainland Tanzania has a generalized HIV epidemic and the primary mechanism for HIV transmission is unprotected heterosexual sex, which constitutes about 80% of all new infections. Unlike its mainland counterpart, Zanzibar has a concentrated HIV/AIDS epidemic.
