Leadership through Accountability at AIDS 2010 in Vienna, Austria

During the International AIDS Conference in Vienna, AIDS2010, the HIV Leadership through Accountability programme presented results from the research done in Kenya, Nigeria and Zambia. The National PLHIV networks of these countries had six abstracts accepted to be presented during the conference.

In addition, representatives from the national networks of PLHIV from Kenya (NEPHAK) and Zambia (NZP+) present in Vienna were asked to speak at related sessions, workshops and satellites. Great interest was shown in the concept of the HIV Leadership through Accountability programme, and the leading role that national networks of people living with HIV are playing in holding their own Governments accountable to HIV commitments in relation to Universal Access.

The HIV Leadership through Accountability programme was used as an example of GIPA in action during the workshop “GIPA – Learning by Doing: A Practical Example” and a presentation was made on Barriers and Opportunities for GIPA during the session “Yes We Can: Community Advocating for Change.”

In addition, four posters related to the HIV leadership through Accountability programme were presented at the conference: a general poster on the programme, as well as posters presenting results from the implementation of the PLHIV Stigma index and the Human Rights Count! in the different countries.

The Global Network of People living with HIV (GNP+) hosted representatives from 6 national networks of people living with HIV at both AIDS2010 conference and the Global Campaigners Meeting pre-conference. Having all the organisations in Vienna also provided an opportunity for an HIV Leadership through Accountability meeting to share learning, challenges and successes and dialogue around what further support was required from GNP+ and the World AIDS Campaign.
