Using LTA evidence to lobby Congress

African Activists representatives, Linda Mafu, Rosemary Mburu and Nombasa Gxuluwe from World AIDS Campaign International (WACI) and leaders of the LTA African Regional Civil Society platform joined RESULTS grassroots lobbyists in their ‘Day at the Hill’ where they met with their representatives at Capitol Hill on Domestic and Global Health issues. Linda, Rosemary and Nombasa lobbyied members of congress from South Carolina and New Mexico in the company of RESULTS grassroots activists.

Saying No to Global Fund Caps

On July 26 2012, African Activists led by members of the LTA Africa Regional Platform joined activists from around the world attending the 19th International AIDS Conference in Washington in a protest to moves by wealthy governments and the Secretariat of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS Tuberculosis and Malaria (Global Fund) that, if implemented, would curtail life-saving scale up of AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria programs.

LTA Focal Point Liaison Meeting held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopa

The HIV Leasedership through Accountability programme held a liaison meeting for focal points from the African national networks of people livng with HIV in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on 3-4 December 2011. The meeting included 18 people from 9 different networks.

Main issues discussed were:

  • Update of programmes in the different countries;
  • Collaboration around LIVING 2012.

Third Annual Planning and Review Meeting - July 2011

The third Annual HIV Leadership through Accountability programme Planning and Review meeting of networks of people living with HIV and Civil Society partners. The meeting included 36 people of 19 different networks and civil society platforms.

Main issues discussed were:

  • The opportunities and challenges around implementation of the evidence gathering tools;
  • Next steps around using the generated evidence for national campaigns received detailed attention;
  • Monitoring and evaluation the achievements
  • Using the research findings for advocacy

Influencing the Political Declaration on HIV and AIDS

Partners from several HIV Leadership Through Accountability (LTA) countries joined hundreds of other activists at the High Level Meeting (HLM) on HIV and AIDS held in New York in June 2011.   For many organisations, thanks to the LTA, this was the first time that they had the opportunity to engage in the process at country, regional as well as global levels. The LTA programme seeks to gather evidence to inform advocacy with the research being driven by and for people living with HIV (PLHIV).  The HLM was a chance to use the evidence gathered to lobby for the rights of People Living with HIV to be better protected.
